Zverev's rivals in the 2026 season: titles, injuries, form
Zverev's best year came in a season in which his biggest rivals took very different paths: Sinner dominated until July and then ended his season with a knee injury, Alcaraz won the Australian Open and then missed four months, and Djokovic still won a title at 39. The overview below shows how the season went for his main opponents. The head-to-head records come from ATP data (as of 18 October 2026) and will change as soon as the players meet again.

Jannik Sinner: five Masters titles in a row, then the knee injury
Sinner started the year with a semifinal defeat against Djokovic at the Australian Open and then won the first five Masters 1000 events of the season: Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome. He beat Zverev four times along the way – in the semifinals in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo and in the Madrid final. At Roland Garros he went out surprisingly in the second round, and at Wimbledon he defended his title by beating Zverev in the final. It was his last match of the year: because of inflammation in his right knee he withdrew from the North American events including the US Open, and on 6 October he declared his season over. His record against Zverev will therefore stay unchanged until 2027 at the earliest.
Carlos Alcaraz: career Grand Slam in Melbourne, then the long break
In January Alcaraz beat Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 to win the Australian Open and complete the career Grand Slam; in the semifinal he had beaten Zverev after 5 hours 27 minutes. The title in Doha and the final in Monte Carlo followed. In mid-April he injured his right wrist in Barcelona and missed Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros and the entire grass season. On his comeback at the US Open he lost in the quarterfinals to Ben Shelton, and in October he defended his title in Tokyo. His defeat to Zizou Bergs in Shanghai on 12 October mathematically secured Zverev's year-end No. 1.
Novak Djokovic: final in Melbourne, title in Beijing
Djokovic reached the Australian Open final after a five-set win over Sinner and made the Wimbledon semifinals, where he lost to Sinner. In between and afterwards there were unusually early defeats, for example in the third round of Roland Garros against Joao Fonseca and in the first round of the US Open against Mariano Navone. In October, at 39, he won the Beijing event for the seventh time, beating Zverev in the quarterfinals on the way. It was the 102nd title of his career.
Alex de Minaur: the opponent Zverev clearly leads

De Minaur won his first title of the year in Rotterdam in February, beating Félix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-2. At the Laver Cup he beat Zverev in a match tiebreak, and in October he reached the Beijing final but had to retire injured against Djokovic. A week later he lost to Zverev 4-6, 4-6 in the Shanghai quarterfinals. Zverev leads their head-to-head 9-4.
Taylor Fritz: title in Washington, revenge at Wimbledon
Fritz had to wait until early August for his first title of the season, which he won in Washington with a final victory over Rafael Jodar. Before that he had beaten Zverev in the Halle semifinals and reached the final there. In the Wimbledon quarterfinals Zverev, helped in part by the American's knee problems, ended a run of seven defeats against Fritz with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win.
Daniil Medvedev: strong spring, no meeting with Zverev
Medvedev won in Brisbane in January and in Dubai in February, the latter without playing the final because Tallon Griekspoor withdrew injured. In Indian Wells he ended Alcaraz's winning streak at the start of the year in the semifinals and lost the final to Sinner in two tiebreaks. In the Beijing semifinals he was disqualified after a ball he hit struck a spectator; Medvedev called it an accident. In Shanghai he reached the semifinals. He has not played Zverev in 2026 so far – the longest rivalry of Zverev's career is on hold this season.
New names Zverev faced in 2026
Besides the familiar rivals, several players stood in Zverev's way in 2026: Flavio Cobolli beat him in the Munich semifinals and faced him in the Roland Garros final. Ben Shelton beat Alcaraz at the US Open and then lost the final to Zverev. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina knocked him out in the Shanghai semifinals and went on to win his first Masters 1000 title. Rafael Jodar, whom Zverev beat in the Roland Garros quarterfinals, reached the finals in Washington and Shanghai in the summer and autumn.
Zverev vs Djokovic: big wins, losing record
Against Djokovic the record stands at 5-10. All five wins came in big matches. In 2017, Zverev beat him 6-4, 6-3 in the Rome final to win his first Masters title. In 2018 he beat him in the ATP Finals final in London, also 6-4, 6-3. At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 he won the semifinal 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, ending Djokovic's hopes of a Golden Slam. In the same year he prevailed 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3 in the ATP Finals semifinal. The fifth win came in the 2025 Australian Open semifinal, when Djokovic retired after the first set. Djokovic won their last completed meeting in the Roland Garros 2025 quarterfinal, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. On 4 October 2026, Djokovic also won the Beijing quarterfinal 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In the Wimbledon final on 12 July, Zverev won the first set in a tiebreak but lost 7-6(7), 6-7(2), 3-6, 4-6. On top of that come the 2025 Paris Masters semifinal (0-6, 1-6), the 2025 ATP Finals group stage and, in 2026, the semifinals in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo.
Zverev vs Alcaraz: narrowly behind after 13 meetings
Against Alcaraz the record stands at 6-7. The most important losses came in big matches: the 2022 Madrid final (3-6, 1-6), the Roland Garros 2024 final (3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 1-6, 2-6), in which Zverev led after three sets, and the 2025 Cincinnati semifinal. Their most recent meeting was the 2026 Australian Open semifinal. Zverev came back from two sets down there and only lost in the fifth set on 30 January: 4-6, 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 7-6(4), 5-7.
Daniil Medvedev: the most frequent rivalry
With 22 meetings, Medvedev is the player Zverev has faced most often. The 8-14 record favors the Russian. Medvedev won the Masters finals in Shanghai 2019 (Zverev lost 4-6, 1-6) and Paris 2020, and in 2025 also the Halle semifinal and the Beijing quarterfinal. Zverev's most important win was the 2021 ATP Finals final in Turin, 6-4, 6-4. Zverev won their last meeting, in the 2025 Paris Masters quarterfinal, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
Stefanos Tsitsipas: the Next Gen rivalry
Against Tsitsipas the record is 6-10 from 16 meetings. In the 2021 Acapulco final, Zverev won 6-4, 7-6(3). Their most recent meeting was the 2024 Paris Masters quarterfinal, which Zverev won on the way to his seventh Masters title.
Rafael Nadal: losses on clay and one last win
Against Nadal, Zverev finished with a 4-7 record. He lost the 2018 Rome final 1-6, 6-1, 3-6. The Roland Garros 2022 semifinal ended at 6-7(8), 6-6 because Zverev suffered a serious ankle injury and had to retire. He won their final meeting in the first round of Roland Garros 2024 and went on to reach the final.
Roger Federer: a winning record against his former idol
Zverev has called Federer his idol. His record against him is a positive 4-3. Zverev still lost the 2017 Halle final 1-6, 3-6, but in August of the same year he won the Montreal final 6-3, 6-4. At the 2018 ATP Finals he beat Federer 7-5, 7-6(5) in the semifinals. Zverev won their last meeting in the 2019 Shanghai quarterfinal and went on to reach the final. At the Hopman Cup in 2018 and 2019, Germany lost both finals to Federer's Switzerland.
Zverev vs Shelton: six wins in six meetings
Zverev has won all six of his matches against Shelton. In 2025 he beat him in the Munich final (6-2, 6-4), the Stuttgart semifinal, the Cincinnati quarterfinal and the ATP Finals group stage. The most important win was the US Open final on 13 September 2026, 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2, which gave Zverev his second Grand Slam title.
Zverev vs Fritz: many losses, one big win
Against Fritz the record stands at 6-10. In 2025 Zverev lost the Stuttgart final to him (3-6, 6-7(0)), and in June 2026 also the Halle semifinal (7-6(4), 4-6, 5-7). In the Wimbledon 2026 quarterfinal he turned things around and won comfortably, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. That is their most recent meeting.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina: 6-2 after the Shanghai semifinal
Zverev leads his head-to-head with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2. The Spaniard has beaten him only twice: at the 2023 Canadian Masters in Toronto, 6-1, 6-2, and on 17 October 2026 in the Shanghai Masters semifinal, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. More on that tournament is in the Zverev news.
More head-to-head records: Thiem, Rublev, Ruud and Rune
Against Dominic Thiem the record stands at 4-8. Thiem won the 2016 final in Nice and the 2020 US Open final, in which Zverev led by two sets to love. Zverev won the 2018 Madrid final against Thiem 6-4, 6-4. Against Andrey Rublev, Zverev leads 7-3; among other wins, he beat him in the 2021 Cincinnati final. Against Casper Ruud it is 4-2, against Holger Rune 3-1. Zverev won his last meeting with Rune in the 2024 Paris Masters semifinal. Zverev's finals against all of these opponents are on the pages about his Grand Slam record and his career with all finals, and this season's results in the list of all 2026 matches with scores.
